Event details
Just as we no longer think about spend and savings as accurate measures of procurement’s performance, implementing and integrating solutions does not equate to delivering digital value. That can only be captured in the experiential and operational capabilities created as a result of our digital investments.
Digital Outcomes 2023 will bring together an enlightening mix of speakers to help you reach beyond the adoption of critical digital solutions to achieve impactful digital outcomes.
Registrants will receive exclusive access to all session replays for the first 30 days following the event.
We will focus on digitally-enabled procurement contributions such as: š
š Building deep and actionable supply chain visibility
š Accelerating decision making and multi-scenario analysis
š Eliminating friction from internal and external user experiences
š Empowering the enterprise to navigate macroeconomic conditions and geopolitical threats

Session 1: Prioritizing the Digital Procurement Experience
The procurement user or customer experience has long been a source of friction within organizations of all kinds. In many cases, this friction is the direct result of the systems used to facilitate procurement processes.
The U.S. Department of State has taken bold steps to address the digital procurement experience. They are deliberately implementing dynamic digital solutions, embracing human-centered design, and moving away from traditional compliance-focused category management in favor of a more strategic and forward leaning approach.
In this interview-based session, Jaime Gracia, Director of Strategic Enterprise Programs at the U.S. Department of State, will share his vision for using automation to improve user experience as well as results delivery and describe what he has learned from the effort to date.
Jaime Gracia Director of Strategic Enterprise Programs U.S. Department of StateMr. Jaime Gracia is a procurement executive and subject matter expert with 20+ years of progressive experience providing vision, leadership, and direction for delivering innovative, cutting-edge acquisitions, training, projects, and programs for public and private sector clients.

He leads efforts in a new Acquisition Experience (Acq-X) program across the Department for internal and external-facing programs. He also leads the Industry Liaison Program, Cognitive Procurement Program for RPA, ML, AI tools, and OMB programs, including Category Management, Vendor Management, and Value Engineering.
Mr. Gracia was formally an Acquisition Manager with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). He also led efforts to create agile contract solutions to ensure the IRS can meet its mission of effective tax administration.
He also served as a Section Chief with the Department of Homeland Security, Cyber Security, and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), National Risk Management (NRMC). Session 2: Thriving in the Chasm
In the classic book Crossing the Chasm, author Geoffrey A. Moore explains how companies and organizations can learn to embrace disruptive ideas. The chasm they must cross bridges the divide between innovators and early adopters to the all-important early majority.
The Art of Procurement team regularly supports all kinds of travelers as they make their way across the chasm. We help disruptive startups communicate their value proposition in a way that appeals to the early majority, and we help innovative procurement leaders drive transformational change - even in corners of the company that would prefer to keep the status quo.
In this session, Philip Ideson and Kelly Barner will share their perspective from inside the chasm. What distinguishes successful travelers on both sides of the practitioner/provider divide - and what can we all learn from them? Attend this session to find out.

Session 3: Running Successful Pilots with Procurement Tech Startups
There has been an explosion of startups in the procurement space, a dynamic that creates opportunities as well as challenges. Although much of procurement’s work has been digital for years, knowing where to begin and how to run a successful pilot are unique capabilities that the team may not have in house.
As the Founder of Digital Procurement World (DPW), Matthias Gutzmann specializes in the startup landscape, and he has experience helping procurement teams determine which startups might make good digital partners and running pilots to successfully introduce new platforms into the company.
Join this session to hear Matthias talk about his 100 day pilot methodology, which takes startups from shortlist to pilot to (hopefully) a successful outcome that procurement can roll out at scale.

Session 4: Cloudy with a Chance of Cyber Risk
Procurement professionals are used to facing, assessing, and mitigating risk. But as more corporate spend goes towards digital investments, that risk is taking new, less familiar forms. In fact, many of today’s top risks are in the cloud.
Cyber risk is a persistent threat for all companies, regardless of size or industry, and it touches nearly every spend category. How can procurement ensure they are ready to do their part?
Jo Peterson is the Vice President of Cloud and Security Services for Clarify360 with expertise in cloud, cloud security and cybersecurity. Just as important, she understands the business considerations and implications of cyber risk.
In this session, Jo will share her perspective on what procurement needs to know to have well-informed conversations about cybersecurity and how this specific type of risk can materialize with both large and small tech providers.

Session 5: Reframing Failure: Thereās Always a Way
Digital transformation is hard - really hard. According to a 2020 study by BCG, 70 percent of transformation projects fall short of expectations. This means that transformations are more likely to fail than to succeed - and yet, digital is not an option.
If failure is not avoidable then procurement needs to rethink - or reframe - how they perceive success.
Gavin Mlinar is the Founder and CEO of Blacklisted Consulting and an experienced procurement executive. He is always up for a challenge - including climbing the equivalent vertical feet of Mount Everest - and knows all too well that you may have to fail 99 times before finding success or reaching your goals. In this session he will suggest ways to reframe your thinking so that no matter what happens, you will never ‘fail’ again.
Philip Ideson Managing Director Art of ProcurementGavin Mlinar Founder and CEO Blacklisted ConsultingGavin is a former Wall Street Equity Analyst and Investment Banker who has leveraged negotiating and communication skills, industry knowledge, and a passion for cost savings into a successful Sourcing, Procurement, and Supply Chain career. He is exceptionally skilled in complex problem-solving, workflow/process simplification, change management, and business unit and Executive collaboration.
Gavin has significant experience negotiating large, complex, multi-million, and multi-billion-dollar contracts for many of the largest IT, Professional Services, and Corporate Services suppliers in the world. He is equipped with a passion for workforce development and world-class team creation by hiring, training and supporting women, people of color, LGBTQ community members, and military veterans.

Session 6: Top Performance Concerns for Forward Looking Executives
Over the last two years, companies have faced a number of unforeseen challenges. Many of these directly impacted how procurement plans, operates, and leverages the capabilities of digital solutions. Procurement leaders are increasing their focus on strategic, data-driven decision support and active performance management.
Failure is not an option, despite the ever-shifting combination of supply shortages, shipping disruptions, workforce constraints, inflationary pricing, geopolitical events, changing consumer preferences, and regulatory changes.
In this session, Pierre Laprée, Chief Product Officer of SpendHQ and Founder of Per Angusta, will be joined by Blessen Kurian, Procurement Director, Digital & Data Science at Thermo Fisher, and Keith Barthelmeus, Interim CPO at Brinks, to help procurement look into the future so they can be ready to continue succeeding in 2023 and beyond.

Session 7: The Care and Feeding of the Procurement Startup Ecosystem
Looking at any of the digital procurement ‘spider charts’ suggests that procurement is an incubator for a vast array of startups. But how many of these companies reach their full potential and who are the innovative CPOs giving them a try?
As exciting as the startup environment appears, there are many challenges as well. Some are related to ‘same old’ problems, like data quality, and others just can’t seem to get traction because the market isn’t ready for their approach.
Jack Freeman is a Partner at PeakSpan capital and a regular speaker at Art of Procurement events. His perspective on the procurement startup scene - the investor’s perspective - reveals as much about procurement’s ability to implement and adopt new technologies as it does the disruptive thinkers that bring them to market. This session will provide a revealing look at the dynamics beyond the spider chart.

Session 8: Cracking the Code: The Importance of Automating Procurement in a Recession
There is a direct connection between procurement’s ability to create value through automation and how they think about their processes and technologies. The same is true of how procurement quantifies the value of their work, not just capturing by savings, but by measuring efficiency and adoption as well.
Digital platforms should not be seen as a threat, but rather impact multipliers that allow procurement to drive corporate growth and bring future results and capabilities into the present.
Lihi Lutan is the CEO and co-founder of Opstream. She has witnessed firsthand the advantages held by curious procurement teams and strategic leaders, including how they position procurement automation in a way that CEOs are intrigued and know what to expect. In this session, she will share her experiences and answer questions about how procurement can finally crack the code to achieve successful procurement automation.
